Caduto, Michael K. and Joseph Bruchac (l988) Keepers of the Earth: Native American Stories and Environmental Activities for Children, Fulcrum Publishing, Golden, CO.
This book is found in the juvenile section of the library, but is also a book for use by adults working with children on environmental themes.

Carson, Rachel, (l956 text copyright, l998 photographs copyright) The Sense of Wonder. Harper Collins. This is a most wonderful essay about introducing a child to nature and it is accompanied by beautiful photographs. It is a book that should be read and reread by anyone interested in helping children bond with the natural world.Parent and Child

Carter, Forrest, (l986 c l976) The Education of Little Tree New York: Delacorte Press.
A wonderful story of a young Cherokee Indian raised by his grandparents. They introduced him to the land, with its animals and plants, and in the process, taught him values that would stay with him his whole life.

Cornell, Joseph: A collection of experiential activities and methods for bringing children and adults into a closer relationship with the natural world. Easy to use.

Cornell, Joseph (l994) Journey To The Heart Of Nature, Dawn Publications, Nevada City. This book was written by Joseph Cornell at the request of World Scouting for use principally by Scouts around the world. It was written as a guided exploration for young adults, l2-l7, but older children, 9-ll, and adults as well, will enjoy its stories and activities.

Dancy, Rahima Baldwin (l989) You Are Your Child's First Teacher , Celestial Arts, Berkeley. Ms. Baldwin has combined the best of Rudolf Steiner's work with recent discoveries to produce a wonderful guide for parents of children from birth through six. It is not a book whose main thesis is the need for children to bond with the earth, but, instead, gives credence to this thesis in many different examples.

Dannenmaier, Molly A Child's Garden: Enchanting Outdoor Spaces For Children and Parents, An Archetype Press Book. This book gives a compelling rationale for the need for children to play in natural settings and offers over sixty ways to bring the out-of-doors back into their lives. Beautiful photgraphs, an inspiring text and a great resource section, including children and adult books.

Giono, Jean (l985) The Man Who Planted Trees, Chelsea Green Publishing Co. , Chelsea, Vermont. The story of a man's generosity to nature-and through nature, to other humans. It is short, simple and inspirational.

Hast, Fran & Hollyfield, Ann (l999) Infant and Toddler Experiences, Redleaf Press, St. Paul, MN. This book has a chapter on curiosity that is practical help on how to provide experiences for young children that enhance their curiosity regarding the world they live in -both indoors and outdoors. A great book for parents or caregivers of infants and toddlers.,

Moore & Wong (l997) Creating Environments for Rediscovering Nature's Way of Teaching, MIG Communications, Berkeley. Natural Learning is an important guidebook for teachers, administrators, designers, and parents on how to create, redevelop and use naturalized schoolyards. Good bibliography.

Sobel, David, M.Ed. (l993) Children's Special Places, Zephyr Press, Tucson, Arizona. This book provides an intimate and genuinely moving glimpse into the world of middle childhood. David Sobel supports his own extensive ad sensitive observations with relevant psychological theory, personal reflections, and descriptions of several wonderful educational projects.

Whiteley, Opal, adapted by Jane Boulton (l984) Opal: The Journal of an Understanding Heart, Three Rivers Press, New York. This is a true story based on the extraordinary diary of an extraordinary six-year-old girl. It is the poignant story of a lonely child who turns to animals and nature for the love and the companionship denied her. A most beautiful story.
